Narrative Assessment - Literacy - 18 June 2015

Learner: Amy              Learning Coach: Miriam Kamsteeg              Date: 18 June 2015
Learning Area: Literacy - Reading
Learning Observed
Today Amy read “In the Garden”. We turned to the first page. Amy pointed to the words and read “This is the insect”. She had looked at the picture for clues. I corrected her with “This is a beetle”. Amy was able to read the next pages, looking at the picture for clues, but again said “the” instead of “a”.
Evidence of learning

Amy is pointing to the words as she reads. I wonder if she does this at home?
Key Competencies/Vision Principles
Amy scored 2/24 on the Duncan Basic Word Assessment. She is developing her Capabilities in reading. Amy is able to work out where to place her finger when reading (Thinking). She is starting to read the texts independently (Using Language, Symbols and Texts).
Next Learning Steps
  • More teaching on basic sight words
  • Continue to encourage finger pointing to the words
  • Share learning with home

Narrative Assessment - Mathematics - 5 June 2015

Learner: Amy     Learning Coach: Miriam Kamsteeg             Date: 5 June 2015
Learning Area: Mathematics - Numeracy
Learning Observed
Today I was completing a Numeracy Knowledge Assessment with Amy. I first showed her the numerals 1-9 in a random order and asked her to tell me what the numerals were. She was able to recognise all the numerals. Next I asked her to count forwards to 10. Amy did this easily. Then I asked her to count backwards from 10. She was also able to do this. Then I showed her the numerals 10 - 19 in a random order and asked her to tell me what the numerals were. She was able to say all of them, except number 13. I then got her to start counting and listened for where she was unable to continue counting to. She got as far as 13 before her sequence of numbers was incorrect.

Amy was able to recognise most of the numerals. I wonder if she practises this at home?
Key Competencies/Vision Principles
Amy was sequencing the numbers in her head in order to count correctly (Thinking). She is developing her Capabilities in counting and numeral recognition. Amy is starting to recognise numerals to 20 (Using Language, Symbols and Text).
Next Learning Steps
  • Explicit teaching on what number comes before and after numerals to 10.
  • Explicit teaching on recognition of the numeral 13.
  • Practise counting to 15.
